2019

High-Voltage Rear Motor Cable Corrosion ("Cablegate")

This is  especially relevant for Canadian buyers in salt-belt provinces like Ontario. Certain 2019–2021 RAV4 Hybrid vehicles may exhibit an illuminated Malfunction Indicator Lamp caused by corrosion in the high-voltage wiring harness under the vehicle at the rear motor-generator connector, or by dirt and debris inside the connector.

The 2019 model year carries the highest risk of any year in this generation, as it has the original unimproved connector design and is now old enough to have accumulated significant salt exposure in Canadian winters. In December 2022, Toyota Canada amended its warranty to cover the cable in the same way as other hybrid system components, for a period of eight years or 160,000 km.

This warranty extension was confirmed through a Quebec class action settlement. However, vehicles that have exceeded this coverage — or where the repair was delayed — may face out-of-warranty costs typically ranging from $5,000–$7,000 in Canada. The first symptom owners often notice before any warning light appears is AM radio static or distortion, caused by electromagnetic interference from the corroding connector.

Buyer Tip: Have a mechanic inspect the undercarriage connector at the rear motor for white or rust-coloured oxidation. Ask the dealer to confirm the cable service campaign status by VIN. Regular undercarriage washing in winter is strongly recommended for ongoing ownership.

Porous Engine Block — Coolant Leak (Safety Recall)

On certain 2019–2020 RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid vehicles equipped with the 2.5L four-cylinder engine, the engine block may be porous, causing it to crack and allow internal or external coolant leaks, which can lead to engine overheating, internal engine damage, and potential engine failure.

This recall involves approximately 8,214 vehicles in Canada. Affected owners are instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to inspect the engine block casting serial number. If the serial number falls within the identified range, the dealer replaces the entire engine with a new one at no cost.

This is not a blanket recall affecting every 2019 RAV4 Hybrid — it is serial number specific. However, it is serious enough that it must be verified before any purchase.

Roof Rail Water Leak

Toyota's Customer Support Program (22TE05) covers certain 2019–2021 RAV4 Hybrid vehicles for roof rail water leaks, covering approximately 267,900 RAV4 Hybrid units in the affected production window.

The roof rail mounting clips used thin rubber gaskets that degrade over time, allowing water to enter through holes in the metal roof. In more serious cases, water reaches the side-curtain airbag wiring and A-pillar electronics. Water damage can cause electrical faults and mould growth that may not be immediately visible.

Buyer Tip: Inspect the headliner along the A-pillars and roof edges for water staining or a musty smell. Ask the dealer to confirm the roof rail service campaign status by VIN. Even without visible staining, a dealer can inspect for hidden moisture damage using Toyota's documented procedure.

12-Volt Battery Drain

A documented defect causes the 12V auxiliary battery to drain while the vehicle is turned off, leaving some owners unable to start their vehicle after even a single day of non-use. The issue is linked to the Data Communication Module (DCM) failing to fully shut down when the vehicle is switched off, creating a parasitic electrical draw. A software update addresses the problem and should be confirmed as applied before purchase.

Buyer Tip: Ask the dealer to confirm the latest DCM software update has been applied. A healthy 12V battery on a well-maintained hybrid should hold a charge for at least two weeks of non-use.

Fuel Tank Underfill

Many 2019 RAV4 Hybrid owners reported being unable to fill the fuel tank to its rated capacity, with the pump shutting off after only around 10 gallons rather than the expected 14.5 gallons,  significantly reducing real-world driving range. This was the subject of a class action settlement in North America.

Buyer Tip: During a test drive, note the estimated range on what the gauge reads as a full tank. If the range seems low relative to the indicated fuel level, ask the dealer to check for any outstanding fuel tank service campaigns on the VIN.

2020

High-Voltage Rear Motor Cable Corrosion ("Cablegate")

The 2020 RAV4 Hybrid carries the same high-voltage cable corrosion risk as the 2019, using the same original unimproved connector design. Owner reports from Ontario and other Canadian provinces confirm the corrosion problem on 2020 models.

Toyota Canada's warranty extension covers the cable for eight years or 160,000 km, confirmed through a Quebec class action settlement in 2022. Otogo The first symptom before any warning light typically appears is AM radio static caused by electromagnetic interference from the corroding connector.

Buyer Tip: Have a mechanic inspect the undercarriage connector at the rear motor for white or rust-coloured oxidation before purchase. Ask the dealer to confirm the cable service campaign status by VIN. Regular undercarriage washing through winter is strongly recommended.

Porous Engine Block — Coolant Leak (Safety Recall)

Certain 2019–2020 RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid vehicles with the 2.5L four-cylinder engine may have a porous engine block that could crack and cause internal or external coolant leaks, potentially resulting in engine overheating, internal damage, and engine failure.

This recall covers approximately 8,214 vehicles in Canada across both 2019 and 2020 model years. If the engine block serial number falls within the affected range, Toyota replaces the entire engine at no cost. The Car Guide Importantly, early-build 2020 RAV4 Hybrids — those manufactured in Canada between approximately mid-September and early December 2019 — are the units most likely to be affected.

Roof Rail Water Leak

The 2020 RAV4 Hybrid is fully within the affected production window for Toyota's Customer Support Program (22TE05) covering roof rail water leaks. The thin rubber gaskets on the roof rail mounting clips degrade over time, allowing water to enter through holes in the metal roof and soak the headliner. In worse cases, water reaches airbag wiring and A-pillar electronics.

Buyer Tip: Inspect the headliner along the A-pillars and roof edges for water staining or a musty smell inside the cabin. Ask the dealer to confirm the roof rail service campaign status by VIN.

12-Volt Battery Drain

The 12V battery drain issue was most widely reported on 2020 RAV4 Hybrids. The defect causes the 12V auxiliary battery to drain while the vehicle is switched off, with some owners reporting the battery requiring replacement twice under warranty within a short period.

The cause is the Data Communication Module (DCM) failing to fully power down, creating a continuous parasitic draw. A dealer-applied DCM software update addresses the issue.

Buyer Tip: Ask the dealer to confirm the DCM software update has been applied. If purchasing privately, ask directly whether the vehicle has ever failed to start due to a dead battery. Owners who leave their vehicle unused for more than a week should use a battery maintainer as a precaution.

Fuel Tank Underfill

The 2020 RAV4 Hybrid shares the same fuel tank underfill issue as the 2019. Owners reported only being able to add around 10 gallons to the tank despite a rated capacity of 14.5 gallons, significantly reducing driving range.

Buyer Tip: During a test drive, note the estimated range on a full tank. If it seems lower than expected, ask the dealer to check for outstanding fuel tank service campaigns by VIN.

2021

High-Voltage Rear Motor Cable Corrosion ("Cablegate")

Affects: Both RAV4 Hybrid and RAV4 Prime

Toyota Canada's technical bulletin confirmed that an improved cable connector part was introduced as a running change during the 2021 model year. Automobile Protection Association This means early-build 2021 vehicles have the original higher-risk connector, while later builds have the improved design. The build date — not just the model year — determines which connector your vehicle has.

Cases of cable corrosion have been documented on RAV4 Prime models as well, with owners in snowy, salt-heavy regions seeing failures emerge first.

Both the Hybrid and Prime are covered by Toyota Canada's eight-year/160,000 km warranty extension confirmed through the 2022 Quebec class action settlement.

Buyer Tip: Ask the dealer to identify the build date and confirm whether the vehicle has the original or improved connector. Ask for the cable service campaign status by VIN. Regardless of connector type, a visual inspection of the rear motor connector for oxidation is recommended on any 2021 model.

Roof Rail Water Leak

Affects: RAV4 Hybrid (early 2021 builds) and RAV4 Prime (very early builds only)

Toyota's Customer Support Program (22TE05) covers certain 2021 RAV4 Hybrid vehicles and certain early-build 2021 RAV4 Prime vehicles — approximately 267,900 RAV4 Hybrid units and 2,000 RAV4 Prime units within the affected production window.

The roof rail design was permanently changed on 2022 model year vehicles, eliminating the problematic clip holes through the roof. Later-build 2021 vehicles may already have the corrected design, but this must be confirmed by VIN and build date rather than assumed.

Buyer Tip: Inspect the headliner along the A-pillars and roof edges for water staining or any musty smell. Ask the dealer to check the roof rail service campaign status by VIN and confirm the build date relative to the corrected production run.

12-Volt Battery Drain

Affects: Both RAV4 Hybrid and RAV4 Prime

The 12V parasitic battery drain issue continues on 2021 models of both the Hybrid and Prime. Early RAV4 Prime owners reported being unable to start their vehicle after a single day of non-use, with the issue traced to the DCM module and addressed through dealer-applied firmware and grounding bolt updates.

Buyer Tip: Ask the dealer to confirm the latest DCM software update and any related technical service bulletin updates have been applied. This is especially important for RAV4 Prime owners who may rely primarily on EV mode, as shorter engine run times can reduce how frequently the 12V battery is recharged.

Fuel Tank Underfill

Affects: RAV4 Hybrid early 2021 builds only — does not affect RAV4 Prime

The fuel tank underfill issue was addressed during 2021 Hybrid production, and the RAV4 Prime uses a different fuel tank design and is not affected by this issue. Early-build 2021 RAV4 Hybrids may still carry this issue, while later builds should not.

Buyer Tip: If purchasing an early-build 2021 RAV4 Hybrid, note the estimated range on a full tank during the test drive and check for any outstanding fuel tank service campaigns by VIN.

The 2021 model year requires careful attention to build dates, as several issues were corrected mid-production.

2022

High-Voltage Rear Motor Cable Corrosion ("Cablegate")

Affects: Both RAV4 Hybrid and RAV4 Prime

Toyota introduced a minor design update to the cable connector mid-way through 2022 production, changing from a sealed unit that trapped moisture to an open design intended to allow debris to drain away. Early-build 2022 vehicles retain the older higher-risk connector, while later builds have the updated design.

Toyota Canada has confirmed an extended warranty on the high-voltage cable to 10 years/unlimited mileage on affected 2022 RAV4 Hybrid and RAV4 Prime vehicles. A September 2025 Customer Support Program (25TD01) also covers these vehicles for a dealer-applied wire harness protector and seal, with a cable inspection and replacement if significant corrosion is found.

Buyer Tip: Ask the dealer to identify the build date and confirm whether the vehicle has the original or updated connector. Even on later builds, a visual inspection of the rear motor connector for oxidation is worthwhile. Confirm the Customer Support Program status by VIN. Regular undercarriage washing through Canadian winters is strongly recommended.

Vehicle Stability Control Software Recall

Affects: Both RAV4 Hybrid and RAV4 Prime

A software error could cause the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system not to turn back on when the vehicle is restarted after the driver had manually disabled it, resulting in non-compliance with safety standards. Toyota dealers update the Skid Control ECU software at no charge to correct this.

Buyer Tip: Verify this recall is completed by VIN at Toyota.ca/recall. It is a simple software update.

DC-DC Converter Fire Risk Recall — RAV4 Prime Only

Affects: 2022 RAV4 Prime only

On certain plug-in hybrid vehicles, the DC-DC converter located under the rear seat could fail, causing the converter and nearby parts to overheat and creating the risk of a fire. Toyota Canada's remedy is to replace the DC-DC converter at no charge. Until repairs are completed, Toyota recommended not charging the vehicle when the ambient temperature was below or expected to drop below 5°C.

Toyota Canada notified Canadian RAV4 Prime owners of this recall in September 2023, with nearly 6,000 vehicles affected in Canada across the 2021 and 2022 model years. This is an especially significant recall for Canadian owners given our climate, as the cold-weather charging restriction made these vehicles effectively unable to use their plug-in capability during winter months until repairs were completed.

Buyer Tip: This is a non-negotiable check for any 2022 RAV4 Prime. Verify the DC-DC converter replacement has been completed at Toyota.ca/recall before purchase.

Front Passenger Airbag Sensor Recall

Affects: Both RAV4 Hybrid and RAV4 Prime

In a small number of 2022 RAV4 Hybrid and RAV4 Prime vehicles, the front passenger seat may have been assembled with interference between internal parts, causing the Occupant Classification System sensor to incorrectly detect the occupant. This could result in improper airbag deployment in a crash.

2023

High-Voltage Rear Motor Cable Corrosion ("Cablegate")

Affects: Both RAV4 Hybrid and RAV4 Prime

The 2023 RAV4 Hybrid and Prime came with the redesigned open-bottom cable connector intended to prevent moisture pooling. However, Toyota Canada confirmed in November 2025 that it is extending the high-voltage cable warranty to 10 years/unlimited mileage on 2023 RAV4 Hybrid and RAV4 Prime vehicles, acknowledging that the redesigned connector does not fully eliminate the corrosion risk. Cases of cable corrosion have been documented on 2023 models in Canadian salt-belt conditions.

A September 2025 Customer Support Program (25TD01) covers 2023 vehicles for a dealer-applied wire harness protector and seal, with the cable inspected and replaced if significant corrosion is found.

Buyer Tip: Even though the 2023 connector design is improved, do not skip a visual inspection of the rear motor connector. Ask the dealer to confirm the Customer Support Program status by VIN and have the protector seal applied if not already done. Regular undercarriage washing in winter is strongly recommended.

Instrument Panel Display Recall

Affects: Both RAV4 Hybrid and RAV4 Prime (equipped with 12.3-inch display)

Toyota issued a safety recall in Canada affecting approximately 70,480 vehicles across multiple model lines due to a software problem that may cause the 12.3-inch instrument panel display to remain blank when starting the vehicle. When the display fails to activate, drivers cannot see the speedometer, fuel gauge, warning lights, or malfunction indicators. The 2023 RAV4 and RAV4 Prime are among the confirmed affected models. Toyota dealers update the combination meter software, or in some cases replace the combination meter assembly entirely, free of charge.

Panoramic View Monitor Rearview Camera Recall

Affects: RAV4 Hybrid and RAV4 Prime equipped with the Panoramic View Monitor option

A software error may cause the rearview camera to freeze or display a blank screen when the vehicle is shifted into reverse on certain vehicles equipped with a Panoramic View Monitor system. Dealers update the parking assist software at no charge. This recall covers 2022–2026 models with this option, so it applies to equipped 2023 RAV4 Hybrid and Prime trims.

Buyer Tip: Check whether the vehicle has the Panoramic View Monitor option. If so, verify this recall is completed by VIN at Toyota.ca/recall. During a test drive, shift into reverse and confirm the rearview image appears immediately and does not freeze.

2024

High-Voltage Rear Motor Cable Corrosion ("Cablegate")

Affects: Both RAV4 Hybrid and RAV4 Prime built before approximately spring 2024

The most recent cable connector design change was introduced mid-February 2024 for the Hybrid and early March 2024 for the Prime. Vehicles built around or before these dates may have an earlier connector design.

Toyota Canada confirmed in November 2025 that it is extending the high-voltage cable warranty to 10 years/unlimited mileage on 2024 RAV4 Hybrid and RAV4 Prime vehicles, acknowledging ongoing vulnerability in Canadian winter conditions. The September 2025 Customer Support Program (25TD01) also covers 2024 vehicles for a dealer-applied protective seal, with cable inspection and replacement if corrosion is found.

Buyer Tip: Ask the dealer to identify the build date and confirm whether the latest cable design is fitted. Have the dealer apply the protective seal under the Customer Support Program if not already done, and confirm status by VIN. Undercarriage washing throughout winter is strongly recommended regardless of connector version.

Instrument Panel Display Recall

Affects: Both RAV4 Hybrid and RAV4 Prime (equipped with 12.3-inch display)

The 2024 RAV4 and RAV4 Prime are confirmed among the affected models in the Transport Canada recall covering approximately 70,480 Canadian vehicles, where a software problem may cause the 12.3-inch instrument panel display to remain blank at startup, preventing the driver from seeing the speedometer, fuel gauge, and warning indicators. Dealers update the software or replace the combination meter assembly at no charge.

Panoramic View Monitor Rearview Camera Recall

Affects: RAV4 Hybrid and RAV4 Prime equipped with the Panoramic View Monitor option

The same Panoramic View Monitor software recall that covers 2022–2026 models applies to equipped 2024 RAV4 Hybrid and Prime trims. A software error may cause the rearview camera image to freeze or go blank when shifting into reverse. Dealers update the parking assist software at no charge.

Buyer Tip: Confirm whether the Panoramic View Monitor is fitted, then verify recall status by VIN at Toyota.ca/recall. Test the rearview camera during the test drive.

2025

High-Voltage Rear Motor Cable — Monitor, Not a Confirmed Failure Pattern

Affects: Both RAV4 Hybrid and RAV4 Prime

The 2025 RAV4 Hybrid and Prime received the most recent cable connector revision. Toyota recently extended the high-voltage cable warranty to cover 2023 and 2024 RAV4 Hybrids, signalling that the redesigned connector may still be vulnerable to Canadian winter road salt over time. Owners of 2025 models in cold climates have been actively seeking preventative undercoating given this concern.

No cable failures have yet been reported on 2025 models, and it is too early to know whether the latest design has fully resolved the issue for salt-belt conditions. The September 2025 Customer Support Program (25TD01) covers 2019–2024 models but does not currently extend to 2025, as the 2025 has a different cable design. This remains a situation to monitor.

Buyer Tip: Have a mechanic inspect the undercarriage and rear motor connector area before purchase. Apply an oil-based undercoating — such as Fluid Film or Woolwax — to the undercarriage, paying particular attention to the rear axle area. Do not use rubberized undercoating, which can trap moisture. Wash the undercarriage regularly throughout winter.

Panoramic View Monitor Rearview Camera Recall

Affects: RAV4 Hybrid and RAV4 Prime equipped with the Panoramic View Monitor option

The Panoramic View Monitor software recall applies to equipped 2025 RAV4 Hybrid and Prime trims. A software error may cause the rearview camera image to freeze or go blank when shifting into reverse. For PHEV vehicles, dealers will inspect the instrument panel assembly and either update the software or replace it at no charge.

Buyer Tip: Confirm whether the Panoramic View Monitor is fitted, then verify recall status by VIN at Toyota.ca/recall. Test the rearview camera response when shifting into reverse during the test drive.

The 2025 RAV4 Hybrid and Prime are the cleanest and most refined versions of this generation. The cable situation warrants preventative care rather than immediate concern, and the Panoramic View Monitor recall is a straightforward software update.
